I view abundance not just as money, but as much more—living to the fullest, enjoying your life, and being genuinely happy and content.
In my experience, the best way to get there is through awareness and gratitude.
Awareness means to be in the present as much as possible. It’s not always easy, but try to keep your chattering mind from…
a) rehashing the past over and over (something we do constantly, e.g., going over conversations that just happened, regretting or being ashamed for things we did, holding grudges toward others, etc.)
b) projecting into the future (e.g., by worrying, something I’m especially big at, as are a lot of women I know; trying to figure out what’s going to happen tomorrow, next week, next month; etc.)
Rehashing the past makes no sense because it’s over and gone—and guilt is one of the most destructive emotions. Projecting into the future is futile. Yes, it’s good to plan for the future and have goals, but too many people mistake planning for safety. It makes them feel as if they know what’s going to happen.
But in fact, planning only gives you the ILLUSION that you know what’s going to happen. In reality, there is very little in your life you actually have control over. (Your reactions to events would be one of those things, but that’s another topic for another day.)
If you’re in the present, there can never be discontent… because the Here and Now is always perfect. Unfulfilled expectations (i.e., the past) and fear/apprehension/anxiety (i.e., the future) is what drives us crazy as we live our day-to-day lives. Stay in the present as much as possible, and life automatically becomes more abundant. That also includes “external” abundance, which will magically find you the more relaxed and aware you are.
The other thing is gratitude, which goes hand in hand with awareness. A good exercise is, for example, whenever you feel your mind slipping into anxious (future) or resentful (past) mode, stop and look around you. Find one thing that is good in your life RIGHT NOW and thank God for it. It doesn’t matter what it is—even little things work, like the perfect little flower next to you on the sidewalk, or a penny that you then bend down and pick up.
(I call pennies with their “In God We Trust” signage “messages from Spirit”—just a little reminder saying, “Hey, I’m here, I’m watching, just call if you need me.” And I ALWAYS pick them up.)
Make sure to open your heart chakra and feel REAL gratitude while you say thanks. Expand your chest and sternum and breathe in deeply while conjuring up a feeling like the one you had as a kid when you got out of bed on Christmas morning.
Speaking of children: A big part of creating abundance through awareness is to become a child again. Try to rediscover the sense of awe and wonder that you used to have when you were young… you’ll be amazed how magical your life becomes just doing this one thing.
